Gallo. 1. El gallo es conocido como emblema de orgullo -lo que justifica la andadura del animal- y como emblema de Francia. Pero ésta es una noción reciente, y sin valor simbólico, fundada en el doble sentido de la palabra gallus: gallo y Galia. El animal aparece, al lado de Mercurio, en algunas representaciones figuradas galorromanas. Se le encuentra también en monedas galas. Pero los romanos han hecho un juego de palabras entre gallus, gallo y Gallus, galo. Éste es el origen del «gallo gálico», que es el emblema de la patria francesa (CHAS, 628-651).
