Esta situación provoca inquietud y preocupación en el mundo económico por el impacto que está previsto que tenga en la economía. El Banco de España dice textualmente que “diferentes factores apuntan a una reducción considerable de la tasa de crecimiento potencial de la economía española en el medio plazo, que podría situarse entorno el 1,2% en el periodo 2020-2025 ante las tasas cercanas al 3% durante el periodo 2001-2008.
Entre estos factores destacan el impacto del envejecimiento demográfico que, según las previsiones actuales del INE, llevaría a una caída de la población del 0,2% anual en el periodo 2020-2025”. Con esta afirmación se ve claramente que el envejecimiento tiene un efecto directo en el crecimiento económico de un país.
Algunos los efectos más directos que el envejecimiento de la población tiene en la economía son:
 Un menor crecimiento económico
 Un desequilibrio en las cuentas públicas
 La distorsión de las políticas monetarias
 La concentración del consumo en unos pocos bienes y servicios.
